- Polyphemus = name of Cyclops
- O wants to wait for Cyclops to come home
- On arrival, O and men build fire and eat food
- (this was Greek tradition for guests to “make themselves at home”)
- Cyclops gets home from his job (he’s a shepherd)
- He does his chores and notices O and men
- Cy wants to know why O and men are there
- O explains and asks for gift
- O warns: be nice or upset the gods
- Cy doesn’t care about gods or the warning
- Cy asks where they parked ships
- O tells a lie: they crashed
- Cy not sympathetic ; eats 2 men
- Cy goes to sleep and O wants to kill him
- He can’t – who will open the huge rock-door?
- (only the Cyclops is strong enough to move door)
- Cy wakes in morning; does chores; eats 2 more men
- Cy leaves for work
- O creates plan: poke his eye out
- They find a dead tree in the cave; sharpen it
- Cy returns from work; does chores; eats 2 more men
- O offers Cy wine
- Cy likes the wine; wants to know O’s name
- Cy offers O a gift if he tells his name
- O tells another lie: “my name is Nobody”
- Cy tells O his “gift” – he’ll eat him last
- O gives Cy more wine; Cy falls asleep
- O and his men poke Cy’s eye out
- Cy wakes up and screams to friends nearby
- They ask: what’s wrong?
- Cy responds: “Nobody is hurting me!”
- O hides his men under Cy’s sheep
- Cy lets the sheep out in the morning
- O almost gets away, but yells to Cy:
- “you got what you deserve”
- O tells Cy: “My name is Odysseus”
- “My father is Laertes” “I live in Ithaca”
- Cy knew about O because a wizard told him this would happen some day
- O tells Cy he would kill him if he could
- Cy prays to father Poseidon for O to never get home
- But, if he does, he wants 5 things:
- it takes a long time
- he has trouble on the way
- he loses all his friends
- he arrives home on someone else’s ship
- he has trouble at home when he gets there
