Romeo & Juliet Wedding WebQuest

Description: A WebQuest is a Web-centered project in which you interact with others as well as specific internet sites in order to complete a task. During this activity, you must use the internet sites provided on this worksheet in order to complete the project. You have been divided into numbered groups, and each group’s number has a correlating job. Please, use your time wisely and efficiently, as you only have this class period to complete the project.

Introduction: In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the young couple is married in secret by Friar Lawrence with no guests, no decorations, and no entertainment. Your assignment is to go back in time to create the perfect wedding for the young couple! You are free to include as many of the resources provided, and your budget is endless – the sky is the limit! Invite as many people as you wish – feel free to cross social, time, and family barriers on your guest list. As far as the food, music, clothes, entertainment, etc., you must stay true to the time period of Romeo and Juliet (late 1500s – early 1600s).

The Process and Resources:

• First you will be assigned to a team and must sit in your assigned seats so that your group may work together to finish finding the information efficiently
• Your group will be assigned a topic.
• Find the links that correlate with your topic, and use them to answer your group's questions/task on a separate sheet of paper. (You may work separately and collaborate at the end if you choose, but you must cooperate professionally and in a mature way.)
• Each member will turn in their own work and be graded separately, but your contribution to the group is part of your grade.

Answer the following questions and/or complete the following tasks as they correlate to your group's topic. If you have any questions, please raise your hand for assistance. Again, all information provided should be written in complete sentences and with enough detail that the wedding could be pulled off without any problems.

GUEST LIST:
One of the toughest tasks when planning a wedding of this size is simply getting all the people together. You have two households, both alike in dignity, to consider. Review the following resources and create a list of guests and a seating chart for tables of 6-10 guests per table. For each table you are to create a list of appropriate conversation topics and/or life situations that your guests will have in common.

Some topics to consider as you search are: everyday life, politics, social events, cultural events and any other category listed below. Remember: what might be appropriate for one group of people may not work for the next.

FASHION:
The first thing your group will do is to search your resources and determine what types of outfits your wedding party and guest will wear. What can we expect to see at this stellar fiesta? You are to design/describe a wedding dress for Juliet and an ensemble for Romeo.

Remember this is the wedding of the century... your guests will be DRESSED TO THE NINES. However, since group 1 may have invited people from different social classes and regions, describe how they would have dressed on a normal day. What materials were used? What accessories were common during this time? What other interesting information did you find out about medieval/renaissance/elizabethan clothes that you did not know before?

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT:
The first thing your group will do is to search your resources and determine what types of music will be appropriate for this wedding. You are to prepare a song list to the best of your ability.

After you compile the music you have to get your guests moving to burn off those party calories. Search your resources to compile a list of games, activities, dances and fun for your party-goers. After you compile a list of games, explain the rules to one of your favorite games (each memeber may have a separate answer if desired).

WEDDING TRADITIONS/BELIEFS:
Your group has the most important task of all... scripting the wedding. In the play Friar Lawrence performs the wedding outside the prying eyes of Shakespeare's readers.

You are to research your sources and design the entire service including the witnesses' roles, any hymns sung during the service, special objects, any legal or financial conditions that must be considered, etc. after all, we want this relationship to last this time! Make sure it is all legal in the eyes of heaven and the law.

FOOD:
Many of us have been to weddings, proms, birthday parties, award dinners, and various social functions where we have endured the worst food of our lives.

Instead of the industrialized, pre-fab, tasteless fare of careless cooks YOU are going to scour the internet and determine the best menu for your guests. Remember... this is the wedding to end all weddings! After you determine the foods that will be served for each course you will create an actual menu and prepare at least three of the foods you will be serving. It must have the feel of the time period of Romeo and Juliet or Shakespeare. The foods you prepare must be as authentic in ingredients and preparation style as possible. All modern substitutes must be noted and explained.

Conclusion:

Now that you have completed your task as a Wedding Planner for the most important wedding in the history of Verona, you should not only have a better apprecitation for the hard work it takes to plan a wedding (now do you see why they eloped?), but you should also have gained more insight about the time period in which they grew up and the lifestyle most people endured.
