Although I do not require you to purchase the novels we read outside of the "rented" textbook, I do find that writing / highlighting in the book assists in your learning, a liberty we cannot take with the school's property. So, in the link section of each novel you will find a "Best Deal" link, leading you to an inexpensive paperback copy available through an online / local bookstore. As you will notice as we read more, I use my own copies of all of our texts, as some of these contain notes when I read the literature in college.
But before shelling out $5-$8 per NEW copy (if you do plan to buy) check the local USED booksellers. Book Broker, for example, puts all classics and schools texts toward the beginning of each section, for each letter.
