Guidelines for Reader Response (Night)

Below you'll find suggestions for your written response to Night. As this is a formal piece of writing, please refer to the criteria given on this website and provided the first day of class. Although I will not require this piece to be typed, I highly suggest it. Criteria for hand-written pages remains that it must be legible, above all else, and double-spaced with writing on every other line. Criteria for typed also remains that it must be double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12-point only. Both hand-written and typed require a title page. Correct format constitutes part of your percentage and grade for this assignment.

For your assignment, response to the following:

First paragraph: between 100-200 words in length, not including the quote:

Copy a passage that strikes you for whatever reason (should be between 1-10 sentences in length). Underline key words or phrases, parts of speech, punctuation marks. What is striking and why? How do words and images work? Or, color mark with different colors specific elements (e.g. parts of speech, shapes, colors, harsh words, nature words, references to earth, sky, time, space, people, animals), to identify dominant elements, patterns or structural shifts, and speculate about the significance of your markings.

Second paragraph: choose one and respond with between 100-200 words in length

  • Make connections with your own experience, with other texts or concepts or events. Do you see any similarities between this material and other books that you have read? Does it bring to mind other issues or incidents or people?
  • Identify the author's point of view, his or her attitude toward the subject, the purpose behind the piece of writing. Compare it to your own or that of other writers.

I will post two examples online and provide you with copies of a low-scoring and a high-scoring response. Please refer to them and model your response after the ideal paper.
