Curriculum Guide's Description of English 9H

The Discovery of Self is the theme of the year-long ninth-grade course integrating the study of language, literature, and written and oral communcation. Students investigate various genres of literature, including poetry, nonfiction, novel, and drama. Students develop skills in descriptive, persuasive, narrative, and expository writings. They also develop creative writing skills and consistently practice critical, creative, adn affective thinking. Students refine skills identified through the Indiana lanugage arts standards and competencies, as well as test-taking strategies, to ensure excellence in application of skills.

Students shall write a miminum of once a week. They shall build a portfolio of their multiparagraph expository compositions. The teacher shall, at times, use ISTEP+ writing rubrics to score the essays. Students shall also receive instruction on using the ISTEP+ rubrics for self evaluation of writing progress.
